Today, we recognize in our country the significant challenges that those with “Autism and Invisible Disabilities” can encounter when confronted by the police. Those with “Autism” and other

invisible disabilities have barriers to communication and understanding, that will make it difficult for them to understand or comply with the “immediate requests from officers.

 Also, those with Autism will use their hands, arms, and body to communicate their anxiety, fear, or when they do not understand. These manifestations can be shaking, flapping arms, or even running

away.

Police officers are not readily aware of the disabilities that can represent these types of physical

manifestations. Therefore, those with “Autism” can present as an imminent

threat to police and are at a greater risk of harm or being killed by deadly

force.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed “too” many lives “tragically” taken because of this grave misperception.
